Gear of War 3, released in 2011, was the last game in the series led by Epic Games. Two subsequent license plate parts - Gears of War 4 and the recent Gears 5 - were developed by The Coalition and tell the stories of other heroes.

It may seem that the fourth part marked the beginning of a new trilogy, however, the head of The Coalition Rod Fergusson urges fans to ignore this concept. “We are trying very hard to get away from the trilogy format. Treat it like a saga. It’s just that we don’t want to commit ourselves to telling the beginning, middle and end of the story by releasing two or three games, ”Fergusson said in an interview with GamesBeat.
