Representatives of Facebook at the Oculus Connect 6 event said that work on augmented reality glasses is in an active phase of development. For the project, it is planned to create a three-dimensional model of the planet, which would allow users to live in improved interactive spaces.
In fact, Facebook “swung” at creating a full-fledged virtual reality, which will lie on top of the physical world. It is planned to use it as a "replacement" for smartphones, instant messengers and so on.
The project is called LiveMaps. This is the "basic infrastructure", which will become the basis of the augmented reality of the future. For this, a common virtual map is used that displays the physical world using machine vision, localization and mapping technology. Data will come from 2.4 billion Facebook users.
To work with the new virtual reality, it is planned to use special headsets and AR glasses. At the same time, they will receive ready-made data, and not recreate the user's environment in real time.
This will provide the possibility of virtual teleportation, will allow you to collect information about nearby objects and locations, as well as reduce the load on the end devices. The timing of the launch of the project has not yet been announced.
