4:10 PM Enthusiast Remakes Sid Meier’s Civilization in Microsoft Excel |
This year, the iconic Sid Meier’s Civilization has turned 28 years old, and by today's standards, the game, which determined the development of turn-based strategies for years to come, looks hopelessly outdated. Moreover, “Civilization” turned out to be so simple in terms of technology that one craftsman was able to create a remake in a program for working with electronic Excel spreadsheets.
A project called S0lly's [CELL] IVIZATION was created as part of the CODEJAM 2019 OLC (One Lone Coder) Programmers' Contest. Its author was a user named s0lly, who shared the results of his work with the public on the Reddit forum. According to the developer, it took him just a week to create Civilization in Excel.
It is worth noting that S0lly's [CELL] IVIZATION is not a complete remake of Civilization. At the moment, the game has only a few types of units, and the mechanics are greatly simplified compared to the original. There is no diplomacy in the remake: as the author himself notes, the only way to win is to destroy other factions.
The author promised to publicize [CELL] IVIZATION on September 7th.
