PCGamesN reporters met at the Gamescom exhibition with the global communications manager of the Polish company CD Projekt, Marcin Trachik, and discussed with him the latest developments in the digital video game distribution market. CD Projekt is known not only as a developer and publisher of video games, but also as the owner of the distribution service GOG.com.
The functionary was asked to talk about GOG.com's attitude to store-exclusive games in light of the latest scandals surrounding the Epic Games Store. Marchin admitted that the company’s turning point in terms of exclusivity was the release of the game in the Witcher universe of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.
“We launched Thronebreaker as an exclusive, but then decided to share this game with a larger audience. This story has proven that maybe exclusives simply don't work for us. We do not want to limit the number of people to whom the game is available. ”
Considering how many of the pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 players decided to support the GOG.com platform, we can say that the CD Projekt approach, which focuses on the player, really does bear fruit. Commenting on the latter, Marchin added:
“It is obvious that if we are able to make a good offer to the players and if we honestly discuss all the advantages, we can persuade them to buy the game on our platform, and not on some other. At a minimum, the lack of DRM is a nice bonus. We want to see that people understand our position on this issue and recommend GOG to friends. We are happy and proud of how people believed in us. ”
